Mother’s effort to sell one-day old baby for Sh80k lands her into police custody

Police officers in Nakuru on Thursday arrested a new mother as she tried to sell her baby just hours after she had given birth.

The 29 year-old woman wanted to sell her baby for Sh80,000 and was nabbed after it emerged that she had been reaching out to possible buyers during her stay in the labour ward.

Diana Wanjiku had been discharged from Nakuru Referral Hospital on Wednesday and went to meet the would be buyer at a nearby restaurant.

Unknown to her, the would be buyer, who works for a children’s home in Ol-Kalau in Nakuru County, had alerted the police about the bizarre transaction.

The would be buyer was then accompanied be a female undercover police officer who posed as his wife.

CASH PAYMENT

Unaware of the setup, the woman accepted a cash payment of Sh45,000 under an agreement that the balance would be sent to her via mobile money transfer. It was than that she was arrested.

According to the police, the woman was planning to deceive her husband that the baby either died or was stolen from the hospital.

Police are now following up seven mobile numbers that were found on her mobile phone which are believed to be of individuals who abetted the woman in the crime.

The suspect will be arraigned in court on Friday and will be charged with the offence of selling a child which is admissible in the children’s act.
