Senator Lesuuda forced to end radio interview by rowdy youth
Nominated Senator Naisula Lesuuda was Friday night forced to cut short an interview at a local radio station in Samburu after rowdy youth stormed the station and threatened to burn it down.
Ms Lesuuda was being interviewed on an evening show at Serian FM in Maralal town when the youth believed to be the supporters of her opponents attacked and demanded that she leaves or they set the building on fire.
Ms Lesuuda is eyeing the Samburu West parliamentary seat currently occupied by Mr Lati Lelelit.
The nominated senator was discussing her manifesto and plans for the Samburu West constituents should she be elected to the seat.
STATEMENT
The senator narrated that she was almost an hour into the ‘Lekira Leserian’ (the evening star) programme which highlights governance issues and civil education when the incident happened.
“I was speaking with the radio presenter selling my agenda and everything seemed normal. People were calling in with positive responses until the group stormed the station demanding that we should leave,” she stated.
The presenter of the show, which runs between 6pm and 10pm, Nick Lenyakopiro, was forced to lock the station’s door from inside as the youths kicked it trying to force themselves in.
The senator was saved by her bodyguard who whisked her away from the station. The presenter then went back on air and notified listeners of the happenings at the station.
The senator was shortly joined by some of her supporters who accompanied her to Samburu Central Police Station where she recorded a statement with the criminal investigations office.
DIVISIVE POLITICS
Ms Naisula cautioned leaders in the County against using divisive and violent politics to intimidate their opponents.
“We are one community, we are looking for various political positions but we do not need any bloodshed because all of us have followers,” she stated.
“Some politicians should not behave like they own the county or the people of Samburu and should desist from intimidating people. We can also defend ourselves because we also have followers if need be, but we want to live in harmony and respect each other as we campaign,” she added.
The Senator wants legal action be taken against the culprits who she said are known persons.
