Family, school in grief after KCSE candidate dies hours to exams
A family in Kadika village, Migori county is mourning the death of their son who died just two days to the start of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
Basil Omondi Ogama, 18, who a candidate at Migori Complex Secondary School died on Saturday night after a short illness.
According to the father, Francis Ogama, the student was in the school when he developed malaria and typhoid and was allowed to go home to seek medical attention.
The father said the deceased was rushed to Oruba Nursing Home and was diagnosed with acute malaria and typhoid and got admitted in the hospital last week for three days before being discharged.
He added that a few days later, his condition got worse and he was again rushed to St Joseph Hospital Ombo on Friday evening and was found to be having the same symptoms.
The deceased was admitted immediately but died on Saturday evening while undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
ACTIVE STUDENT
The mother of the deceased Ms Grace Akinyi Ogama said that her son’s condition got worse when he wanted to go back to school for the rehearsal for his examinations on Friday morning.
She described her son as an active student who took part in many co-curriculum activities in the school as he was a member of the school drama club, music and handball team.
The school Principal Edwin Agere regretted the candidate’s death just a day before the start of the examination.
The school head confirmed that the student was released on Friday morning from the school to go home and seek treatment for malaria after he complained of severe headache and muscle pains.
The Principal also said the examination supervisors had expressed willingness to take the exam papers to the hospital where the candidate was admitted.
The school has registered 66 students to sit for the form four exams that starts on Monday morning.
