Former NTV journalist Janet Kanini honoured posthumously

Deceased TV journalist Janet Kanini-Ikua has been honoured posthumously for her coverage of health issues.

Ms Kanini was awarded the Tom Arocho Award for commitment and excellence in the coverage of lung health issues in the media during the fourth International Scientific Conference that kicked off in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Ms Kanini was a Nation Media Group journalist until her demise in April this year due to cancer.

Researchers were also feted at the biennial conference that is hosting more than 500 researchers on respiratory diseases.

While receiving the award on her behalf, Ms Kanini’s widower, George Ikua, recalled that lung cancer had claimed his father-in-law only two weeks into his marriage in 2008.

Researcher Asiko Ongaya, who is one of the organisers of the conference, said that Ms Ikua’s case is unique because she blogged and posted on social media of her battle against cancer.

As people anxiously waited for her posts, she began a campaign to bring the PET scan into Kenya.
