A sad mood has engulfed Mindiliwo Village, Elgeyo Marakwet County, after an elderly woman was burnt to death inside her house.

Esther Kipkorir, 77, was alone in her house and was trying to clean up after breakfast when she fell on the jiko and could not pull herself out.

Confirming the incident, Keiyo North Administration Police commander Joseph Biwott said the old woman had a physical disability and used crutches to move around.

“We suspect she was not able to pull herself from the burning jiko,” he said.

He said none of the neighbours detected that the woman was in troubled and it was too late when her grandson, a primary school pupil, returned from school and found her lying on the jiko.

Biwott said the grandson alerted the neighbours in an attempt to rescue her but it was too late as the woman had succumbed to serious burns.

He said police visited the scene and launched investigation into the incident.

“We have been told by neighbours that the deceased was in good health. We are investigating to determine if someone was behind the death,” Biwott said.

The body was removed to Iten County Referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.
