Long weekend ahead as Govt declares Monday a public holiday

The government has gazetted Monday June 26 as a public holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr.

Idd-ul-Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadhan. The month, characterised by dawn to dusk fasting by Muslims, lasts 29 or 30 days depending on the lunar cycle.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisserry declared next Monday a public holiday in a special Gazette notice published on Tuesday.

This year’s Ramadhan coincided with skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, food shortages due to drought and rising political temperatures ahead of the August 8 elections.
