Frustrated UoN students mull suing varsity over lecturers’ strike

A group of students at the University of Nairobi are now considering moving to court to force the institution’s administration to annul this semester.

This is a result of their frustrations on the administration’s silence on the way forward on the ongoing lecturers’ strike.

The postgraduate degree students are however divided on whether they should proceed to the courts or let the semester slide.

Proponents of the move, some of whom have volunteered to take up the case personally, have complained about the administration’s silence as their efforts to get updates from the relevant offices have been futile.

“I was told there is no information yet about what we are supposed to do,” one of the students whose identity cannot be revealed for fear of victimization said.

Furthermore, there are concerns that should the semester come to an end without any studies, ongoing students whose year of study begin in May will be required to pay a miscellaneous fees of Sh12, 500 charged every academic year despite the fact that no studies have taken place this semester.

This is the second time in less than a year that studies have been disrupted at the university.

Last year, the university was closed as students were preparing for their exams due to student riots following allegations of a rigged election of student leaders.
