Confusion as police outlaw Cord rally
Confusion has marred the intended Cord rally at Uhuru Park on Madaraka Day after police said the venue has been already been booked for three days by an evangelical group.
Consequently, the police have advised Cord to look for an alternative venue for their rally.
According to Nairobi County Commander, Japheth Koome, Cord has already been informed about the unavailability of the venue.
“I have written to Cord over the same. They will have to look for an alternative venue. Their notification of participation on Madaraka Day at the same venue is therefore not approved,” Koome told Nairobi News.
PEACEFUL EVENT
The rally is intended to coincide with the Madaraka Day celebrations in Nakuru which will be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Cord has, however, vowed to hold the rally inspite of it being outlawed by the authorities.
Speaking in Nairobi on Saturday afternoon, Siaya senator James Orengo said Cord will go ahead and hold the rally.
Orengo also dismissed claims that a religious group had booked the venue but insisted the event will be peaceful.
“It will be a peaceful celebration. We have peace marshals to ensure there is calm,” the legislator said.
Plans are also in place for Cord leaders to attend the burial of those killed in Siaya and Kisumu during protests against IEBC early this week.
