Man sent to jail for smoking bhang as an ‘appetizer’
An elderly man who told a Nyahururu court that he smokes bhang as an appetizer has been jailed for three and half years.
Joseph Muchendu pleaded guilty to the charge of smoking the drug before Principal Magistrate Peter Ndege.
He was charged that on June 30, 2016, at around 5am at Mairo-inya trading centre, Nyandarua County he was found with 200gms of bhang by Administration Police officers who were acting on a tip off from villagers.
‘APPETIZER’
The court heard that police found the accused person in possession of the drug after conducting a search in his home. He was arrested and taken to Mairo-Inya Police Station where.
In mitigation, the accused pleaded for leniency claiming that he cannot survive without smoking bhang as it was an ‘appetizer’. The accused also said that he always finds himself unable to work or eat without smoking bhang.
It passing the sentence, the magistrate gave no option for a fine. The accused has 14 days to appeal.
