Assistant Chief arrested after defiling minor in his office

An Assistant Chief has been arrested after he allegedly defiled a Standard Four pupil in his office in Rutara area, Mirangine Sub County, Nyandarua County.

Mr Jonah Macharia was arrested on Sunday and locked up at Mirangine police station after it was reported that he defiled the minor. The assistant chief is also a preacher at a local church.

The child, aged 12 years, had been sent to collect her grandmother’s Identity Card from his office when the administrator is said to have taken advantage of her.

ORPHAN SUPPORT

The girl’s grandmother wanted to enlist the girl in a support programme for orphans offered by the government.

“I decided to seek details from the assistant chief who requested me to send my grandchild, who is an orphan, to his office with my identification card,” she explained.

She said the assistant chief had advised her that her physical presence was not required for the registrtaion and that she could sent her grandchild.

The girl later confided in her class teacher about the irape, who later reported it to the head teacher.

“I was  called by the head teacher to the school, he informed me what had happened to my grandchild. We rushed her to J.M Kariuki Memorial Hospital in Ol Kalou where she is currently undergoing treatment and later reported the matter to Mirangine police station,” the grandmother narrated.

IN COURT

Confirming the incident, Mirangine OCPD Mr Thomas Sungut said the Assistant Chief is expected to be arraigned in court where he will be charged with defilement.

“Preliminary medical investigations indicated that the child was defiled. We are expecting to arraign him in court today or tomorrow,” the OCPD said on Monday.

“We have been using the chiefs and other local leaders in dealing with issues of defilement and it is very scary to learn that the same authorities are involved. We don’t know whether residents will still have trust in them. This case must be fully handled and justice prevails so as to stem out this kind of behavior.”
