He loves big cars, trendy outfits and showing off his wealth. He also loves big English words; in fact, he is credited with crafting the 2017 election buzzword Tibim, whose meaning no one seems to know.

Some also say Babu Owino, the veteran students’ leader at the University of Nairobi is a violent man for issuing threats and leading students in street protests. He has also been accused of using crude means to stem dissent during his reign as SONU chairman.

But unknown to many, the man who was born Paul Ongili, has a mellow side.

Just recently, the Embakasi East parliamentary candidate on an ODM ticket unveiled the love of his life, much to the excitement of his fans.

In an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, Mr Owino said he is a husband and a father of a one-and-a-half-year-old girl.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

He met his wife Fridah Owino seven years ago at the University of Nairobi. They were both first year students, him pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science while her a Bachelors in Economics.

“It was love at first sight, I just saw her and knew she was the one. She is beautiful, intelligent and I knew I had to get her before other men cast their eyes on her,” says Babu.

However, with all his popularity he has been able to keep his wife a secret, leaving many Kenyans to assume he was a rogue politician and bachelor.

So why introduce her now, while on the campaign trail, we asked.

“I can never use her as a campaign tool for my election as Embakasi MP. In fact she is the one who suggested that I allow her to help in my campaigns. I love and respect her,” he says.
