A Nakuru court has sentenced a 26-year-old man to 10 years in prison for assaulting his two-year-old stepson.

Alfred Ombati, accused of beating up his two-year-old stepchild, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate David Kemei on Friday.

A doctor’s report showed he caused the minor serious body injuries.

According to the prosecution, Mr Ombati traveled from Kisii County in July searching for a job in Nakuru and ended up being employed in Nakuru West as a storekeeper by Ruth Kerubo.

The court heard that Ms Kerubo, who is a divorcee had two children with her previous husband, fell in love with her employee and later got married to her.

BRUISED

The court also heard that not only did the children consider Mr Ombati their guardian but also perceived him as their second father.

The court further heard that one day the accused was left with the children and on returning home, their mother found her two-year-old son full of bruises and crying in pain.

She took the child to a hospital after reporting the incident at the Nakuru Central Police Station, which led to the arrest of the accused.

The accused who pleaded guilty to the charges argued that he was instilling discipline on the child and did not mean to harm him since he considered him his own.

The court found Mr Ombati guilty as charged and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
