Equity bank staff to be charged over Sh30m kitchen knife robbery

Three Equity bank staff are set to be charged in an Othaya court over the theft of Sh30 million last week in a robbery incident.

Police have concluded that the robbery was an inside job.

Three men posing as auditors had last Friday stolen Sh30 million from Equity bank, Othaya branch.

The only weapon they used during the morning incident was a kitchen knife that they held on the branch’s deputy manager neck as they ordered him to unlock the cash vault.

The smartly dressed trio had posed as auditors sent from Equity bank head office in Nairobi to inspect the books at the branch. They even flashed fake identification cards to prove that they were genuine Equity bank employees.

Police sources said the three men reportedly gained access to the bank through the rear entrance at around 6 a.m.

They are said to have moved around the bank pretending to be inspecting but nobody suspected any foul play.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
