Space Lounge ordered shut down for lack of licenses

Nairobi nightclub, Space Lounge, has been ordered shut down by the Nairobi City County for lack operation licences.

In issuing the order, the Nairobi City County noted that the management of the club, which is located along Ngong’ road, has failed to comply with directives on noise levels in accordance with agreements it signed with area residents and the county.

A letter from the sector signed by Mr H. M. Angwana for Secretary County Liquor Board in the county’s Commerce, Tourism and Co-operative Sector, noted that the residents of the neigbourhood where the club is situated are still annoyed and disturbed by the noise emitted by the business.

It also pointed out that the establishment has continued running its business despite the expiry of liquor licences on October 8.

LEGAL BATTLE

“Given your defiance, the County hereby declines your application for Liquor Licence as provided for under the Nairobi County Alcoholic Drinks Acts 2014. You are ordered to cease operating forthwith,” the letter reads in part.

The club has been embroiled in a legal battle with its neighbours over its loud music at night.

In September, a court in Nairobi revoked the permit issued to Space Lounge Limited pending the hearing and determination of the suit.

It also prohibited “further operation of live music, streamed music or any other music within Space Lounge Bar.”

The magistrate also ordered Kilimani Police Station OCS to ensure the nightclub complies with the court order.
