SNAPPY 7: Sylvia Munia – I would love to do more good gospel music this year

Exposed to the world of music at a young age, Sylvia Munia from Nyeri will be one to watch in the music industry this year.

It has not been an easy start for her as she struggled to record her first song in 2016 Sifu Bwana. Since then she has released a mini-album of five songs complete with videos.

She sat down for a chat with Nairobi News and talked about her upbring and what she envisions about her future.

1. Briefly tell us about yourself? – I was born and brought up in Nyeri. I’m from a religious and humble family. I am still new in the music industry and for those who do not know me, I’m from Nyeri. That’s me basically.

2. When did you start singing? – I started singing as a young girl, in Church. As long as I can remember I used to entertain people at home and in Churches. I also sung in school and I won many awards at the festivals.

3. What inspired your song Sifu Bwana? The song was inspired by an American artiste who sang the song in English and then I took it and changed it to Swahili and added my own words. I used to listen to the song when I was a little girl and one day when I was in studio the producer started playing with the keyboard and the song just came to mind. I ended up recording it in Swahili, the tune and the message remain the same but it is in Swahili.

4. Apart from singing, what else do you do? – I am a manager at a construction company based in Nyeri. I have been working there for almost eight years now and it is my full time job.

5. Have you had a chance to perform your songs anywhere? – It has only been three months since I released my songs and in December I was invited to perform at Mojo fest in Karen.

6. Which Gospel artist would you like to collaborate with? – It is not about singing, it is about what connects you to that artiste, the message they put out and their dedication to God. I find the late Angela Chibalonza is my role model and her music still blesses me today.

In terms of a collabo I would love to sing with Gloria Muliro and Mercy Masika. Both of them are dedicated to Church and it would be a dream come true to do a song with them in the future.

7. What should we expect from you in the future? – In future I would like to do more and more good gospel songs with good messages. If it is a calling then you cannot walk away from it. People should expect more this year from me.
